USNS Hershel Woody Williams new Navy Ship
The christening ceremony for USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams took place on Saturday, October 21, at 10:00am at General Dynamics NASSCO. The ceremony was streamed live. Uniquely, many dignitaries, Military Officers, friends and family was in attendance.
Senator Joe Minchin represented the State of West Virginia giving an address. Additionally, the ceremony rang with accolades from Major General Eric Davis Commandant of the 1st Marine Division. Notably, Marines were present in and out of uniform with rigid hand salutes. Private First Class to Major Generals. The Marine Corps Band displayed enthusiasm with every drum beat.
Many were in awe of the USNS Hershel Woody Williams Admirals of the US NAVY including: Rear Admiral William J. Galinis, Program Executive Officer, Ships, U.S. Navy; and Vice Admiral Dixon R. Smith and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics. Retired Officers, Survivors of the USS Arizona and Medal of Honor Recipients crowded the ceremony deck.

In fact, USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams is the Navy’s second ESB ship. The 784-foot-long ship will serve as a flexible platform to support a variety of missions, including air mine countermeasures, counter-piracy operations, maritime security and humanitarian missions. Additionally, the ship will provide for accommodations for up to 250 personnel, a 52,000-square-foot flight deck, fuel and equipment storage, and will also support MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters with an option to support MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft. Currently nearing the end of construction, the ship will be delivered to the U.S. Navy in February 2018.
The ship is monumental as it towers above the dock. This was a grand experience with amazing transformation form steel to masterpiece.
